These days, though, I’m more into wedding photos, but probably not the kind you’re used to. This time I’m reacting against shot lists, stage direction, flashguns, and photoshop effects.

from the About page

I’ve updated my wedding posts to include a slideshow of the complete set from the wedding, like the one below. Click here to see them. Enjoy!

(If you’re reading this on Facebook, click that link to the original blog post to see the slideshow.)

Be Resorts, Mactan

It was great to help out in the wedding of Maan and Ariel, good friends of ours. We game them a print of this photo as a wedding gift.

El-el and Ryan passed on the modern wedding “necessities” (towering cake, 3-page guest list) to focus on the real essentials: family, friends, and the commitment they were promising, in spite of the mayor’s warnings (from experience, apparently) of difficulty ahead. Isn’t that really all you need?

Everyone was relaxed. No one panicked when the mayor asked for the coins (they weren’t brought). Instead, everyone gamely reached into their pockets to raise the needed 13 5-pesos. (The mayor even called out to his staff if they had any!) You get so used to the manic everything-must-be-perfect! of today’s weddings. This was refreshing.

I’m conscious though that my pictures lack a lot of pretty (sorry El! not your fault, promise). Shouldn’t real wedding photographers produce dreamy, romantic shots? Maybe soften filters will help? I dunno. To do: work on pretty.

I’ve finally finished processing El-el’s pictures, but first: one more from Tonton and Valerie’s. If you’ve seen the whole set you’ve probably noticed I don’t have a lot of real “wedding pictures.” I quickly lose interest taking pictures of something five other cameras are pointed at, which is why these look-the-other-way shots are usually the ones I seem to find (and like ;)).

You’re at that age when a lot of your friends are tying the knot. Which means… more practice.

This is from Tonton and Valerie’s, last December 17. My idea of a good reception is when the guests don’t leave after the dinner, but stay for the rest of the program. Theirs had guests milling around even after the program, you couldn’t get them to start leaving! Everyone just wanted to stay and celebrate. Great.

I hate wedding photographers. Intrusive. Overbearing. Don’t get me started. One wedding I attended–you know that part in the reception when the groom takes the bride’s garter from under her dress for the garter toss?–the photographer tells the groom, ‘Stick your head under the dress and give a thumbs up!’ The groom has no choice, the photog has his shot, the guests have some laughs. I’m cringing all the way.

Why don’t you just stand back, dammit, and wait for something to happen, instead of conjuring up your own moments to capture? Why can’t you be more like Alison Conklin, with her (authentic) bright and cheerful shots; Climie + Co, who favors in-between moments that make a wedding unique; and mighty Jeff Ascough, preserving the mood by leaving the strobe at home?*

And don’t tell me only the white man can do it: Mango Red firmly plants our beloved three-stars-and-a-sun in wedding albums all over the world.** Don’t tell me it can’t be done.

Anyways, here’s one more from the wedding with Bong (click here to see the full set). Call the set photography-as-protest.

*Home at Olympus, that is. He rolls strobless, but I’m sure he carries a set of lightning bolts in the trunk, force of habit.
**The green-blue cross-processed look gets nauseating after a while (but I loved it on Sara Meier (at Calaruega!)), and I don’t care much for prenup as fashion shoot, but R-E-S-P-E-C-T, men. These guys rock.

We’re back!

It took a few months to figure out what I wanted out of this camera, but lately I’ve shot some pics worth sharing. I’m still shooting in the street (stay tuned), but I’m also exploring other stuff, like weddings (click here to see the full set).

I hope to get back up to a post a day, so tell your friends, catch me in Google Reader, and let me know what you think in the comments.
